THE AGING PHENOMENA

We are all concerned about aging whether we admit it or not.  Aging happens but it doesn’t mean we accept it without a fight, so why not start working on prevention rather than reversal?  Prevention is always easier!

One of the most valuable products to help prevent the aging process is one of the simplest, sunscreen!  90% of skin aging can be contributed to sun damage which occurs in our early years.  This damage takes roughly 20-30 years to surface, so it is important to ensure you are applying sunscreen to your skin early and often. Teaching this to young children is especially important to prevent skin problems later on in life.

As we age the most noticeable changes in our skin are:

  • decreased skin elasticity
  • darker pigmentation
  • pore size
  • pronounced fine lines
  • overall thinning of the muscle and fat of the face

We start to notice aging in our 30’s and 40’s, as the natural cycle of life starts to slow down. This leads to the appearance of discoloration, wrinkles, sagging, and reduction of collagen production.  We can also have hormonal changes that can trigger acne.

As we approach our 50’s menopause can become a problem for our female clients. This phenomenon can cause changes in our estrogen levels which result in drier skin and collagen loss, potentially leading to sagging skin along the jaw and around the eyes. Years of sun exposure will also re-emerge as rough skin texture and sunspots.

It is never too late to begin using anti-aging products to slow down the natural aging process.  The sooner you start the process however the less damage to your skin there will be.  Retinols are used to stimulate collagen, prevent and treat existing wrinkles, and even fight acne if you have started struggling with this issue.  Vitamin C promotes collagen production, which has the potential to thicken the dermis, diminish fine lines, and is essential for firm, younger looking skin. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, meaning it protects skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV/Sun exposure.

Two products that we highly recommend are Jan Marini Retinol Plus and Cesta Serum, which are tried and true products with years of research and awards.

Retinol Plus contains highly concentrated all-trans-retinol, which is combined with advanced peptides and antioxidants. This combination fuses soothing and hydrating ingredients together, helping to achieve maximal results with minimal acclimation.

Cesta Serum is a powerful antioxidant cocktail, featuring Vitamin C and DMAE, which has been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and uneven skin textures.

Along with these two products, there are many products from Biologique Recherche that are formulated to fight the aging process. I’ve listed a sample of my favorites here as well.
